A Reduction of Carbohydrates: Low Carb Diet


An emphasis on dietary protein and fat is encouraged by a low carb diet and from the term itself, it restrains the intake of carbohydrates such as grains, rice, cereals and starchy vegetables and fruits. Low carb diets have a variety of kinds, with different restrictions on the kinds and amounts of carbohydrates one is allowed to eat.

Primarily, a low carb diet is brought into play by those who want to lose weight. There are different reported benefits from engaging in this kind of diet aside from weight loss. These include reductions on the possibilities of having heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers and metabolic syndrome.

Aside from a desire to shun the extra pounds, other people engage in a low carb diet for the sake of changing their overall eating habits. Others choose this diet so they can explore the different kinds and servings of food offered by the low carb diet. However, before venturing into this type of diet, be sure that you have consulted with your doctor and you do not have medical conditions that will be affected by the diet, especially if you have diabetes.

If you badly want to have this diet, it is rudimentary that you know what you want to be restricted, that is, carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are present in almost every food and beverage since they are naturally occurring particularly on the plant-based foods like grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes. Furthermore, carbohydrates are often added to processed foods by most food manufacturers in the form of starch or added sugar.

The focus of low carb diet is on proteins which can be found from meat, fish, poultry, eggs and other non-starchy vegetables. However, other low carb diet includes other fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Generally, the amount of carbohydrates is limited to 50-150 grams.
