It is a product taken through mouth containing dietary ingredients which are planned to supplement the diet. It is the combination of vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids and other dietary substances used by man to complement the diet to improve total dietary intake. Dietary supplements can also be constituents, extracts or concentrates.

 

Today, majority of people do not eat a sufficiently well balanced diet. Dietary supplements help people receiving the required amount of nutrients and thus maintain their health and energy properly. In some countries it is regarded as food and in somewhere it is considered as drugs. It may be found in many forms including capsules, tablets, pills, gelcaps or powders. They can also be taken in the form of liquids, powders, soft gels or bars.

 

Dietary supplements cannot declare that they can prevent, cure or treat any diseases. It should be taken very carefully. There are some dietary supplements that can cause some serious side effects from high blood pressure to seizures and strokes. For this reason, before taking any types of these supplements, it is very important to inform your healthcare provider about the vitamins, herbals, minerals or any other supplements you are taking.

 

Be cautious to consume the product in the recommended dosage. Overdose of dietary supplements may cause potential health risks and negative side effects. Patients with diabetes or high blood pressure should consult a medical practitioner before taking these supplements. Moreover, let your physician know if you are taking any multi vitamin supplements or any other medicines.

 

Don’t take these products without consulting your healthcare professional if you have any serious health problems. Tell your physician if you have a family history of heart diseases as well as liver or kidney disorders. Moreover, pregnant and breast feeding women don’t take these supplements without consulting with their healthcare provider. If you are a patient recommended for an elective surgery, then stop taking dietary supplements at least two to three weeks ahead of the procedure to keep away from potentially dangerous drug interactions.

 

When choosing any type of supplements you should always select them cleverly. Only purchase the supplements from pharmaceutical GMP compliant manufacturers.
