A proper and well balanced diet is essential for a diabetes treatment. It can help patients with diabetes control and maintain normal blood glucose levels by losing weight. It also prevents heart problems and blood vessel disease. Diet treatment for diabetes should comprise three things – accomplish ideal weight, maintain normal blood glucose levels, and limit foods that cause hearing problems. A dietitian or nutritionist can assist to plan a diabetes diet.

Weight loss and reduced intake of cholesterol and saturated fats, in favor of monounsaturated and unsaturated fats, can reduce the blood cholesterol levels. Foods with fiber such as vegetables, fruits, peas, whole-grain breads, beans and cereals also help lower blood glucose. Since dairy products and meats are high in saturated fats so it should be avoided. Most vegetable oils are the major sources of unsaturated fats that are good for health in limited quantities. Olive oil – healthiest type of fat – is a fine source of monounsaturated fat. Liver and other organ meats and egg yolks are mainly high in cholesterol. So don’t use them.

Keep away from table sugar and eat fruits only with meals. Substitute whole grains in place of refined carbohydrates found in bakery products. It helps to maintain blood sugar level. As the consumption of too much protein damages the kidneys, the treatment sometimes restrict the use of chicken, meat and eggs. Similarly, eating extra servings of pasta, rice, bread, fruit or other carbohydrate foods will raise the blood sugar level.

These are some food items that you can eat without any counting: bouillon or broth, carbonated or mineral water, sugar-free hard candy, club soda, coffee or tea, sugar-free gum, diet soft drinks, sugar-free drink mixes or tonic water, sugar-free jell and two teaspoon sugar free syrup. It is suggested that you should spread out these foods during the day and not consume them in one sitting.
